FUNDING
Edmond J. Safra Philanthropic Foundation
The Edmond J. Safra Program in Parkinson’s Disease is situated within Toronto Western Hospital. It is home to one of the largest movement disorders clinics in North America, and is a Parkinson’s Foundation Centre of Excellence, providing care to more than 7,500 patients annually with Parkinson’s disease, tremor, ataxia, dystonia, progressive supranuclear palsy and other movement disorders. Advancing basic knowledge of the causes of Parkinson’s disease and the development of novel therapies through basic and clinical research are extremely high priorities. The Edmond J. Safra Philanthropic Foundation provides generous support for our team to establish a research facility using neuropathology based methods to study neurodegenerative disorders underlying movement disorders and cognitive decline.

The Rossy Foundation
Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a rare brain disorder with deposition of pathological tau protein in the brain. As it worsens, the disease can cause serious problems with walking, balance, eye movements, swallowing, as well as changes in mood and thinking. The Rossy PSP Centre was established by The Rossy Foundation, which supports our work to provide care for these patients together with the movement disorder’s clinic at Toronto Western Hospital and to perform research to make ground-breaking discoveries to find a cure for the disease.

UHN Foundation
Part of University Health Network (UHN), UHN Foundation raises funds for research, education and the enhancement of patient care at Toronto General and Toronto Western hospitals, Toronto Rehab and The Michener Institute of Education at UHN. With donor support, UHN Foundation is helping UHN pursue new knowledge to build a healthier world. UHN Foundation is an amalgamation of Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation and Toronto Rehab Foundation.

Accumulation of Alpha-synuclein is a defining feature of Parkinson's Disease (PD). Parkinson Canada supports our project investigating the contribution of lymphatic vessels to the drainage of Alpha-synuclein from the brain and the impact of a lack of these vessels in the development of PD-like pathology in an animal model.
Received by Dr. Naomi Visanji
Michael J. Fox Foundation
The Michael J Fox Foundation supports two projects within our laboratory exploring the sensitivity and specificity of detecting alpha synuclein in peripheral tissues biopsies from living patients, using an antibody with high reactivity for disease-associated forms, as a biomarker for Parkinson’s disease.
Received by Dr. Naomi Visanji
CONNECT-TBI
Connect TBI is a network of 30 leading investigators from 13 institutions to study the link between traumatic brain injuries and neurodegenerative disease.
